For Acne Treatment Boston Residents Are Better Off Seeing A Dermatologist

By Frank Patterson

It is not only teenagers that suffer from pimples. They are a dread for younger woman and men and even older people experiencing constant skin irritations. The very idea of appearing in public sporting a face full of pimples is unthinkable for many people. They will do almost anything to hide these aberrations and they will spend large amounts to get rid of them. In the end however, when it comes to acne treatment Boston citizens are best off consulting a qualified dermatologist.

Many people spend large amounts in an effort from preventing pimples from developing. Unfortunately many preventive measures are based on incorrect assumptions on what it is that causes pimples. They are not caused by sugar, chocolates or, in fact, any type of food. They are not caused by stress and they are not caused by sweat either. The main cause for pimples developing is blocked follicles.

Pimples can be caused by a number of things. Cosmetics is one of the main culprits, especially oil based products and even more especially if the face is not cleaned properly after wearing cosmetics. The oil glands become inflamed because they are clogged. The same effect can be caused by several types of chemicals. Strangely, people that habitually wear helmets and suspenders are also prone to develop pimples.

There is certainly no shortage of remedies. Unfortunately, most of the numerous preparations that are available over the counter will make no difference whatsoever. The best route is to consult with a dermatologist. He will carefully evaluate the situation and recommend the best possible course of action. Retinoids are routinely prescribed because they are great in helping to prevent the clogging of the follicles. Oral contraceptives and antibiotics are also often highly effective.

Some patients opt for more drastic treatment. The use of blue light therapy is becoming extremely popular. This is mostly done in a salon but certain types of light treatment can be done at home. In rare cases a dermatologist will physically remove all the black and white heads with special tools designed for this purpose. This is a risky treatment method, however, because it can easily leave scars.

In most instances even a severe case of pimples will clear up and leave no reminder. In some cases, however, serious scarring can result, especially if the pimples were squeezed and scratch. A dermatologist may recommend laser treatment to lessen the effects of the scars and a chemical peel can also help making the skin look more even. Injecting fillers around the affected areas have also proven to help.

There is no guaranteed way in which to prevent pimples but there are a number of sensible steps to take. The face should be kept clean at all times and it is recommended to use a mild soap to wash the face several times a day. It may also help to regularly apply an exfoliolating mask. Using water based cosmetics is far safer than using oil based preparations.

Regardless of the amount of money spent or the care that is taken in personal hygiene, pimples will strike every now and then. The best route is to leave the pimples unmolested, to keep cleaning the face thoroughly and to see a dermatologist if the problem becomes severe. Pimples are not contagious and they are not a health hazard.
