Feminine Herbal Supplements Benefit Women

By Deborah Morris

Women have particular health needs, many of which have not been well understood by the medical profession. A woman needs wisdom, humor, flexibility, strength, energy, and serenity to meet all the demands of work, home, and family. Feminine herbal supplements have helped women cope for centuries, and research has validated folk lore passed down through the ages.

Health and balance depend on the proper functioning of the endocrine system. This system consists of a number of glands that produce hormones. Hormones regulate every function of the body: growth and development, metabolism, energy production, reproduction, and mental and emotional stability. Improper nutrition, lack of some essential nutrient, a stress overload, and environmental pollution are some things that can disrupt the hormonal balance so vital to health. Fortunately, nature is a treasure house of beneficial herbs that help women maintain or regain this balance.

People learned to depend on the plants around them for healing long before recorded history. We are indebted to ancient herbalists for a long list of beneficial herbs. Modern research has validated much of this folk lore, and exploration of the corners of our planet has expanded the list. The wealth of knowledge and options might seem overwhelming. However, herbs are remarkably safe when used properly, and people can simply try a tincture, tea, or pill to see if a particular herb gives them what they need.

Some herbs are helpful all through a woman's like, from puberty to post-menopause. Vitex is one; it eases menstrual pain, boost fertility, and moderates such menopausal symptoms as hot flashes and night sweats. Red raspberry leaves are known as a pregnancy tonic, but they also help prevent uterine prolapse in the elderly. Dandelion, nettle, hawthorn, and oat straw nourish and strengthen the entire body.

Menstruation is a natural function of the female body, but it can be so out of balance that it used to be called 'the curse'. Licorice regulates the cycle, lady's mantle and cayenne help curb excessive bleeding, ginger and black cohosh help with pain. Many more herbs help with PMS symptoms.

There are many herbs for the childbearing years. Nettle and dandelion are valuable sources of minerals that keep blood rich and bones strong. Maca, vitex, and lady's mantle boost fertility. For morning sickness, try wild yam or a cup of ginger tea.

One of the most common complaints of women today is fatigue. The demands of work, home, and family are hard enough without feeling tired all the time. Blue vervain and licorice root have long been used for energy. Maca, a South American root, has achieved fad status in recent years as people discover its energizing properties. Depression and mood swings, which sap energy, can be tempered with schizandra, hawthorn, and evening primrose oil.

Menopausal symptoms - hot flashes, night sweats, emotional instability, weight gain, skin problems - have perhaps made more herbs famous than any other complaint. Fortunately, herbs can bring real relief. Sage, Asian ginseng, vitex, dong quai, wild yam, and black cohosh are used by million of women all around the world. Maca, soy, and motherwort can also help ease women through this transition.
